Jonathan Callan: “The Borders of Reasons and Instinct” (2020)

New in the Collection is a very fragile piece by Johnathan Callan:

John wrote about it:

“This is a page from book printed in 1910 on nature. Humans have had ideas about the separation of reason and instinct for at least two thousand years, probably much longer. Much of human thought and behaviour is an inescapably complex mixture of the two. It seemed somehow appropriate to split this page in two. Duality or some conception of opposites is also an important feature of now humans arrive at understanding. It can often be impossible to escape the binary positioning of thesis and antithesis”.

A general quote that describes his approach: „Most of my work is derived from a fascination with materiality. I’m interested in fluff, dirt, dust. I’m interested in things breaking down. I’m interested in that which cannot be said but can only be shown. Most objects to me are not real until I can find what is inside. Which presents a paradox, since we can only ever see the surface of things. The real interior of any object is seen as a series of surfaces beyond and behind which are only more interior surfaces. This is a morbid inclination. Perhaps implying that things can only be understood after having been broken down or destroyed, suggesting that the attainment of knowledge is an invasive procedure, no gaze or observation leaving its subject unmarked.“

Side Angle

One of Jonathan Callans Gallerists, Martin Kudlek, sticks the famous “red dot” to the piece on Art Cologne which was an instant decision to me.

There is another piece of a similiar make, but for me the title was the reason to choose this one. Unusual as well is that the title can also be read in the piece itself – usually the title comes from fragments of the books or papers involved, this time it is clear to see for everyone and in bold letters above the page.
