Jonathan Callan
A Flower in May 1944
43 x 33 x 6 cm
2020

Jonathan Callan has used a historic accounting book as base material. It could be one of those used in concentration camps to account the number of inmates, of incoming and dead people. He sculptured a flower into the material that seems to float in space. The title could be a reference to a famous foto taken 1944 in Auschwitz Concentration Camp. A boy presents another kid a flower as a present upon arrival at the concentration camp. As it is noted on the photograph, everyone on the photo was dead within 24 hours wiped out by the camps deathly machinery.

The referred photo courtesy by Auschwitz Memorial was done by the SS and shows Hungarian Jews at Auschwitz II Birkenau, most likely the 26th of May 1944. All the people are sitting around 100 meters away from the gas chamber and crematorium IV.
